For young fans who never had a chance to see the real deal, I think Gary Mullen and the Works is close to the next best thing. Perhaps not a new trend, perhaps this is. Only a few weeks ago my wife and I saw Queen (The Fab Four) and now we're seeing "The Beatles" (Gary Mullen and the Works)?
His singing was only quite good, thanks to a sore throat. Gary's performance of Freddie Mercury was fun and bombastic. At some points, people were yelling "I love you Freddie", which was a bit surreal.
The rest of The Works musicians where also talented and they played well together as a unit. When that wasn't getting in his way, it was only dreadful at points.
It's Queen music, let's face it. They do a good job picking from that list. They have a hits list mile long. There was quite a long intermission with the first half being much longer than the second half.
If you've always wanted to see a Queen concert, this might be the next best thing. If you're a fan of Queen, you'll enjoy this evening. On a better day, this show would probably be worth 4-stars.
